If you’ve ever had your portrait taken, you’ve more than likely been instructed to “say cheese!” Forced or not, a smile looks great on anyone, and grinning for the camera is now an instinctive pose for many. In celebration of the smile, Moscow-based photographer Ilya Nodia was invited by Senior Group to create a touching portrait photography series of elderly ladies and gents. Titled Smile doesn't get old, the collection features senior citizens happily beaming at the camera, each revealing their playful personalities.
Nodia visited several nursing homes to find his cheery subjects, where he turned their cozy living quarters into temporary photography studios. “The usual schedule was completely disrupted,” reveales Nodia, who remembers the exciting atmosphere. Elderly ladies picked out straw hats and powdered their cheeks, while the men teased their beards and carefully positioned their medals.
Dressed in their best and ready for their close-ups, the series reveals that each subject’s winning feature isn’t their clothes, but their gleeful grins and the sparkle in their eyes. Just like the line from the Broadway musical Annie—“You’re never fully dressed without a smile!”
